What is the meaning behind the group name?

In Vietnamese Con Ca means Fish. The Fish was the mark of the early Christian. The first believers did not dare to wear any mark of their faith. If they did so they were often persecuted and killed. The Greek initials of "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior" made up the Greek word for Fish.  The early Christians sketched the sign of a fish as a sign to others that they were Christian.

Today the FISH still stands as a symbol of a Christian.

The Fish Symbol = "Jesus Christ, God's Son is your Savior".

What are the Age Ranges in the Group?

When the group first got started, most of the founding members were mostly teenagers and beginning college students. We have members entering the group while they were teenagers and have stayed with the group through out the years and have grown older too. The recent ages in the group ranges from early 20s to just outside of 30. Most of us are undergrad students, some going back to school to earn our Master's degree and others just working.

What do you do in a meeting?

In a usual group meeting, we set the mood with candles, light wordless music and then we start the meeting, we have a moment of silence and place ourselves at the meeting. We start the meeting with an opening prayer. After that we choose a song from Ca Nguyen Linh Thao or a song from a handout which we make sure everyone has a copy and sing together a song to help us get into a prayerful mood. Then we each have a check-in sharing--where we share about any spiritual experience we encountered  or how God have been present in our lives since we last met.

In more simpler words, we come together to have a "spiritual potluck feast" which we share with each other.  Then we share/talk about something relating to the current program or topic the group is journeying through. Sometimes we have some group admin. stuff to discuss but we always end the meeting with a closing prayer. And if time permits we have a short snack and tea time or go out for dinner together.

Is Everyone required to participate in the annual retreat (s)?

We don't require all to participate but it is beneficial to all members of the group to attend the annual retreats to grow and reconnect ourselves with God by going away and spending some quality time with God. Often times our lives are so busy that we lose ourselves and distance ourselves from God. A retreat gives us the opportunity to silence all the noise inside and outside of us in order to really hear what God is saying to us.

How does this group benefit your personal life?

To be a member of the group and participate in the group activities you gain friends. But these are not just normal friends.  Through a period time these friends become like a second family. A second family with whom you trust enough to share personal stories, worries, and experiences. And this second family will help you (and with you) grow spiritually.

Most importantly you build a friendship with people and connect with them on spiritual level with God. Not only do you build friendships but you also have a better relationship with God. Through building a better relationship with God, you strengthen your faith in God and improve your spiritual life...leaving you feel more fulfilled and happy. In the midst of all that building and strengthening, some personal growth occurs and we see that our prospective changes socially and spiritually. The first step is to open our hearts to God and others.

Why do we need a group like this?

Each member of Con Ca have different needs and concerns as to why they are in the group, however, we all have a common desire. We have a desire to know God more deeply, know more about our faith, to love God more, and to follow Christ more ardently.
