"Blessed are you poor." Really? Two difficulties:
- How can poverty be good? The answer here might be feasible: not because poverty is good, but because God blesses the poor.
- I am from the US, not poor in the world standard. Am I on the other side of God unless I shed any wealth I have. Paradoxically, many Americans struggle economically in the US, as disparity within the US widens.
I guess the "answer" to the second question may take two forms:
- whether I am rich or poor by US standard, I need to be compassionate to the very poor in the world, whom I may not pay attention to.
- God enters into a covenant with the whole people, including the poor, and the rich can ride along.
Theologians out there: what is the meaning of "Blessed are you poor"?
