Another interesting detail: There is a distinction to be made in the nuance associated with the verb "to know." To the Hellenistic mind, to know something is to grasp or apprehend and object mentally, to see it in the mind's eye. To the Hebrew mind, to know something is to experience it in relationship of some kind. The passage talks about the Lord "knowing" his sheep and vice versa. As Christians, we know God not in Hellenistic sense, but in the Hebraic sense. We know God through our relationship with him through Jesus Christ. A second point, when Jesus talks about bringing life to the flock, he talks about bringing life abundantly. What does it mean to live life abundantly as opposed to merely living life. Of course, it points to the spiritual dimension. But can anyone articulate what it looks like? Without the quickening of the Holy Spirit, we Christians are like the artist describing colors to a color blind person. Pax. SP.
